The Georgia State Board of Dispensing Opticians is a six-member board appointed by the Governor to
protect, promote and preserve the public health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Georgia. The
Board is composed of five licensed, practicing dispensing opticians and one consumer member. The
Board reviews applications, administers examinations, licenses qualified applicants and regulates
the practice of the licensees throughout the state. Complaints are investigated and, if warranted,
disciplinary action may be taken by the Board. Board meetings are held approximately four times
each year at the Secretary of State’s office in Macon and are open to the public. Persons wishing to
bring matters for the Board’s consideration should submit a written request to the office.
Licensed opticians prepare and dispense lenses, spectacles, eyeglasses, contact lenses and optical
devices as authorized by a written prescription from an optometrist or physician skilled in diseases
of the eye. Dispensing opticians can be considered for licensure after meeting specific educational or
work experience requirements and examination.

Be Safe and Prevent Eye Injury.
More than one million people suffer eye injuries each year in the United States. Appropriate
protective eyewear could prevent ninety percent of these injuries.
Choose protective eyewear with "ANSI Z87.2" marked on the lens or frame. This means the glasses,
goggles, or face shield meets the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z87.2 safety
standard.
Follow these tips to protect your eyes:
In the house:
When using household chemicals, read instructions and labels carefully, work in a well-ventilated
area and make sure to point spray nozzles away from you. Many chemicals are extremely hazardous
and can permanently destroy the surface of your eyes, resulting in blindness.
In the workshop:
Think about the work you will be doing and wear protective eyewear to shield your eyes from flying
fragments, fumes, dust particles, sparks and splashing chemicals. Many objects can fly into your
eyes unexpectedly and cause injury.
In the garden:
Put on protective eyewear before you use a lawnmower, power trimmer or edger and be sure to
check for rocks and stones because they can become dangerous projectiles as they shoot from these
machines.
In the workplace:
Wear appropriate safety eyewear for your job. Many of the thousands injured each day didn't think
they needed eye protection or were wearing eyewear inappropriate for the job.
Around the car:
Battery acid, sparks and debris from damaged or improperly jump-started auto batteries can
severely damage your eyes. Keep protective goggles in the trunk of your car to use for those
emergencies and everyday repairs.
During sports and recreation:
Boxing and full-contact martial arts pose an extremely high risk of serious and even blinding eye
injuries. There is no satisfactory eye protection for boxing, although thumbless gloves may reduce
the number of boxing eye injuries.
Contact lenses offer NO PROTECTION, and contact lens wearers require additional protection when
participating in sports.

Safety Glasses:
Safety glasses are very common in many industries as they are designed to protect your eyes from
work-related dangers while working. Safety glasses are used for eye protectionby men and women
who work in environments that have small debris such as flying objects, flying particles, dust, wind,
heat, sparks, splashes, acid splash, chemical burns, abrasive blasting materials, glare, stray light and
injurious optical radiation. Motorcycle riders and bicycle riders often wear safety glasses as well.
Safety glasses that are made of out of hardened glass are scratchproof, but they can shatter on impact
and damage your eyes. Because of this, you need to make sure that your safety glasses are made out
of a polycarbonate plasticor glass that is made to resist impacts. These polycarbonate and
plasticglasses can also be made with anti-scratch, anti-fog and ultraviolet coatings on the lenses to
help you see as clearly as possible. The lenses can also be tinted with different colors. Safety glasses
are also available with prescription lenses that are made with all of the features of the safety glass
lenses.
Safety Goggles:
Safety goggles are an important item of eye protectionas they are designed to protect your eyes from
the hazards and dangers of the work place. Safety goggles are used as protective equipmentand safety
gearby men and women in a wide variety of industrial environments. People who work in
manufacturingindustries, machine shops, grinding, machining, welding, assembly, laser cutting,
carpentry, construction, and maintenance should all wear safety goggles to protect their eyes. People
who work in dusty areas with airborne dust particles, such as sand blasting, should also wear safety
goggles while working.
Most types of safety goggles are made out of transparent, high impact, molded polycarbonate
material. The goggles ensure proper sealing at the bridge of the nose, and the eye brows and the soft
frame fits snugly around the face. The glasses are coated with anti-fog coating and have suitable
ventilation slots for air circulation to remove internal fogging. The internal side may be coated with
acetate for enhanced anti-fogging. The lenses should also be scratch resistant and shatterproof for
extra vision and eye protection.
Face Shields:
Industrial face shields are items of safety gearthat are designed to protect your eyes and face from a
variety of work-related hazards. Like safety gogglesand safety glasses, face shields are made to offer
you protection from small flying objects, flying particles, dust, wind, heat, sparks and splash from
molten materials, acid splash, chemical burns, abrasive blasting materials, glare and bright light.
However this protective equipmentis built to cover your whole face and part of your neck, not just
the eyes. Most types of face shields are made out of impact-resistant plastic or polycarbonate. The
shields can be further coated with anti-abrasive coatingsand ultraviolet coatings. They offer some
amount of protection against heat rays that are emitted in heat treatingand molten metal pouring
operations.
Most face shields are fastened to your head with a separate adjustable strap that fits around the brow
or with a strap that is attached to the face shield. Make sure that your face shield fits you properly
and is comfortable. It shouldn’t hinder your breathing, sight or speaking in any way and it shouldn’t
make you hot and sweaty while you are working. You should keep you face shield as clean as possible
so your vision is never compromised.

What Is Protective Sports Eyewear?
Protective Sports Eyewear are eyeglass frames or goggles specifically designed and manufactured to
meet or exceed the appropriate United States impact protection standards. All protective sportswear
must also have polycarbonate lenses designed to withstand impact.
The impact of a ball or other equipment as well as an opponent's hands and elbows pose a threat to
an athlete's visual safety. According to a 2001 report by Prevent Blindness of America, there are over
38,000 sports-related eye injuries requiring costly emergency room care. This number could
potentially skyrocket when you consider the treatment of eye injuries in a private practitioner's
office. As sports participation statistics continue to climb, and newly identified "extreme" sports
gain in popularity, the number of athletes who fall victim to eye injuries has the potential to grow at
alarming rates. School-aged competitors are particularly prone to eye injuries since their athletic
skills (hand-eye coordination, balance, reaction time and speed) are still being developed. However,
regardless of an individual's age or skill level, every athlete's eyes are targets for injury. Under most
circumstances, at least 90% of sports-related eye injuries are preventable with the proper use of
protective sports eyewear.
